Thanks Peter, I saw that.  The shaft is too short but I bookmarked it in case I run into a dead end.  I can drill and pin an extension on it if I have to.  If I don't hear from Mark Oppat, that will be my plan.

My approach to a short shaft is to use a spring-clip and a bit of JB weld as it typically does not interfere with clearances. There are also kits available with various shaft lengths.

Thanks again Peter.  Anything I do to extend the shaft has to allow enough clearance for the outer collar that the radio uses to locate the front escutcheon.  A spring clip might interfere with the outer collar but I haven't tested it yet.  The control I need is a round shaft and the control I'm looking at is a 3/4, so I may just grind both sides of the 3/4 shaft to a slot and notch a piece of round stock, then epoxy or even pin across the notch.  

I'll wait the weekend for Mark before going the fabrication route.

I couldn't wait for Mark at oldradioparts.net to get back to me as I had a customer anxious to get this done.  If it was for me, I'd have waited.  This is what I ended up with:

This is a dual 5K with a 1.5" shaft, so it will only require a little trimming down to fit.  It's also new so I won't have to worry about a noisy control.  I'll also have to fudge a couple of 470  ohm resistors in, but it should otherwise work fine.  Thanks for the advice.

Just warn your customer that it is a linear-taper pot, and so the volume onset may be faster than with the original - unless that was linear as well.

Considering the one installed was 40K (!)  this one will be far less a binary control than what it had even if the factory original was audio taper.
